The Gandhi-Luthuli Documentation Centre is based at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Campus, B – Block.
The Documentation Centre was established in 1979. In 1965 the University College for Indian Students was formed. This served the interest of Indians an Indian University was formed as early as 1965 at Salisbury Island.As you know the University was, under the Apartheid regime, an Indian University formed as early as 1965 at Salisbury Island. The University moved over to the suburb of Westville in 1971. As it was an exclusively Indian University, the University Council decided to form a Documentation Centre. The Centre’s main purpose was to house information on the Indian community. This would include artifacts, manuscripts, books, newspaper cuttings, newspapers, photographs, audio-visual material and the similar items. The purpose of this was to record, faithfully the history, and social, cultural, religious, political, educational, and recreational life of the community.
