For the Center to achieve excellence it must be properly positioned and needs to pursue a specific mission located within the broader mission of the university. The mission of the Documentation Center is therefore as follows
To support the research and academic needs of the University students and faculty and to serve as a focus for public programs of interest to the campus and wider KwaZulu community.
To encourage partnerships with community, cultural and educational groups and institutions.
To demonstrate through its collections, a commitment to research excellence, inter – cultural tolerance and its faith in the future of a democratic South Africa.
To offer extension services that afford the general public the opportunity to exploit the resources of the Center. Towards this end, the Center seeks to mount traveling exhibitions, awards bearing endeavours and educational programs on heritage resources.
To become a national asset by ultimately serving not only the university but also the provincial, national and international community.
